REMOTE/ HYBRID WORK POLICYWAISN employees are currently located across the state of Washington and do not share a centralized office. Staff members are not required to work in person when handling day-to-day role responsibilities but will be expected to gather for events such as staff retreats and other all-staff reunions throughout the year. New staff members will be offered a $2,000 stipend to aid in relocation from out of state to Washington state if selected for their respective positions.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network seeks a highly talented development director to lead the organization’s development, fundraising efforts, and high-level relationship-building and cultivation. The Development Director leads the Development Team, which includes the Development and Fundraising Manager, Grants Manager and Grant Writer Coordinator. The Development Director reports to the Executive Directors and supports them in setting and managing organizational strategies for fundraising, grant oversight and grant making. This position is also responsible for managing a portfolio of WAISN community subgrantees and in charge of cultivating relationships to ensure our values are reflected in the process beyond the dollar support. The Development Director will be part of the senior leadership team of WAISN and therefore in charge of modeling and creating a management culture in accordance with WAISN’s mission, values and analytical frameworks. This is a team in formation and changes in responsibilities may take place.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Fund Development, Team Management, and Leadership: (40%)
● In collaboration with the Executive team and other team members, lead the development and implementation of an annual fundraising plan that includes year-round cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of current and prospective donors, funders, and revenue sources;
● Develop and execute a comprehensive fund development program that includes specific fundraising goals and targets, with a focus on building a diverse and sustainable revenue base for WAISN that includes foundation grants, government grants, individual donors, and other sources;
● Oversee development department and directly supervise and manage the Development and Fundraising Manager and Grants Manager, including but not limited to setting and conducting annual reviews, and supporting their ongoing professional development;
● Monitor progress toward fundraising goals in collaboration with the Operations Finance team on quarterly and annual basis to debrief the Executive Team and board of directors;
● Collaborate with the Finance team in developing the revenue side of the annual budget in alignment with the annual fundraising plan.
● Collaborate with the Executive team to identify and implement opportunities for engaging the board, WAISN members and other key partners in fundraising efforts;
● Collaborate with the Executive team and Department Directors and/or Managers on financial elements of grants including budgets, invoicing, spend-down, and reconciliation.
Oversight and Cultivation of Foundations and other Institutional Funders (30%)
● Identify potential new foundation and government agency funders; develop strategies for connecting with new funders through existing relationships and networks;
● Support Executive team in outreach and cultivation of new funders;
● Provide supervision and guidance for Development and Fundraising Manager in researching prospective new funders that align with our strategic growth and core values;
● Provide supervision and support for Grants Manager in developing, writing, and revising grant proposals and reports, with a particular focus on assuring high quality products for high-stakes proposals/reports for large dollar amounts or for key potential new funding partners.
Oversight of Individual Donor Cultivation (10%)
● Collaborate with Development and Fundraising Manager to develop an individual donor strategy as an integral part of overall organizational fundraising plan;
● Provide supervision and guidance for Development and Fundraising Manager in implementing donor cultivation strategies, including regular solicitations and campaigns via multiple platforms, thank-yous and follow-up, and ongoing management of donor database;
● Work with Development and Fundraising Manager & Executive Directors in developing strategies to slowly cultivate major donors, including long- and short-term outreach strategy for each donor prospect and a follow-up plan consisting of coordinating schedules to arrange meetings, drafting personalized thank-you letters from the Executive Team;
● Provide supervision and guidance for the Development Team and volunteers in organizing grassroots cultivation events.
Subgranting: (20%)
● Help reshape and position WAISN as a lead subgrantor of immigrant & refugee organizations across Washington State, including a strategy to grow departmental capacity.
● In collaboration with the Executive team, create the subgranting strategy which includes the proposal of who will be subgranted and what will be the scope of work;
● Develop a process for Sub-grantee Scope of work, contract, and requirements;
● Liaise and streamline communication about the programmatic deliverables of the contract and support needs for subgrantees with other WAISN’s departments, throughout the duration of their contract;
● Develop a reporting schedule, process and onboarding curriculum for all WAISN subgrantees;
● Create a monitoring plan with subgrantees to evaluate progress toward deliverables, completion of activities and compliance of financial requirements;
● Evaluate the effectiveness of program, gather data and create reports for various stakeholders;
● Collaborate with the Operations team to process invoices and payments.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
● Preferred Masters/Graduate Degree or equivalent work experience Development and fundraising.
● Minimum of six (6) years of non-profit experience with a demonstrated track record of success in creating and implementing a fund development strategy.
● Minimum of six (6) years of community building experience.
● Minimum of five (5) years of leadership experience, preferably working in an organization that works with immigrants or communities of color.
● Minimum of four (4) years experience working with local, state, and federal funding agencies.
● Minimum of three (3) years of financial and budget management leadership experience.
● Demonstrated ability to recommend and implement process improvements that enhance operational efficiency and that are adopted by stakeholders while collaborating with other personnel to support process changes as needed.
● Model learning, transparency and accountability to solve problems;
● Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills;
● Strong understanding of the complexities and nuances of relationship-building with foundations and donors while maintaining a solid commitment to the organization’s social justice values;
● Demonstrated commitment to immigrant rights and social justice issues, and the Network’s organizational values;
● Strong writing skills, particularly for writing succinct grant proposals and reports and press communications;
● Ability to manage multiple projects at once and prioritize tasks as needed;
● Demonstrated ability to organize time and manage multiple projects successfully;
● Ability to thrive in a changing environment and to remain flexible and adaptive;
● High degree of ownership – able to proactively identify opportunities and propose solutions, willing to roll up sleeves and pitch in on a variety of tasks.
● Flexibility to work evenings and weekends, when necessary;
● Demonstrate technical expertise in a variety of data and technology systems;
● Contribute to and lead interdisciplinary projects, coordinating closely with member groups;
● Desire to invest in the Network’s growth and development;
● Proficient computer skills, especially Google docs;
● Experience with productivity tools a plus, including Little green light, Quickbooks, Mailchimp, Piktochart, and Canva.
COMPENSATION This is a full time position. The salary range for this position is starting at $110,000 depending on experience.
